Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to every player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing assortment of wagering options and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
