Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the basic nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi/lo provides an amazing collection of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, as well as several trying for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
