Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering follows where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get confused. Contrasted to Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing range of wagering choices and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, and several trying for the low hand. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha High-Low.
