Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker contender on the planet by quite a few of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandpa introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wanted to learn whatever he could about poker. He would tell his parents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil did not let the detrimental comments from others kill his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
Phil began playing intently after getting a false ID by the name of Jerome. He practiced his techniques at the poker rooms in Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win was not a regular outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved 2 final tables and came away with his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he defeated quite a few of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Sin City. He continues to play in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the greatest players on the planet. Ivey credits his success to discipline and a continuing passion for the game of poker. Phil states that he is picking up skills every single day and is incredibly humble about his success. Phil admits to making blunders in each session of poker and always strives to get better.
Although Ivey has won some large tournaments, he favors destroying cash games on a regular basis.
