Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by most of the top professionals. Phil was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to NJ before reaching the age of 1. His grandpa taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to pickup anything he possibly could about the game. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He didn’t permit the adverse comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors in the world.
Phil started playing seriously after acquiring a false ID with the name of Jerome. He practiced his skills at the casinos in Atlantic City. The beginning few years for him were a learning period and winning was not a normal thing at the time. He became known at the 2000 WSOP where he made 2 final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the closing table he destroyed a number of the better known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his game to the successive level and headed out west to Vegas. Phil continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing love for poker. Phil states that he’s learning every day and is incredibly abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and constantly strives to get better.
Despite the fact that Ivey has won some big-time tournaments, he favors destroying money games on a normal basis.
