Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he liked playing various card games at a young age. He discovered himself getting very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to participate in some formidable chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial two years were tough as he played extensive hours and lose most times. He earned some additional money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could boost his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on poker.
The definite advancement in his skills happened when he started betting at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the greatest gamblers would often wager against each other. Howard was able to access a number of the best players in chess. With their help, he would tweak his strategic thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.
Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie Duke was a great student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena ever. Howard headed to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
