Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he loved participating in various card games at a young age. He found himself getting really aggressive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing Sr. High school, Howard decided to place college on hold for a bit and moved to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While playing chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the rear of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and fail to win a majority of the time. He earned some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he possibly could better his game by adjusting his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and focus even more on the game.
The real advancement in his skills happened when he started playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge one another. He had access into some of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, Howard would sharpen his strategic thinking techniques. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL texas hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie Duke is one of the strongest female players the poker world ever. He moved to Las Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he decided to participate in more tournaments.
