Phil Ivey has been referred to as the greatest poker contender in the world by most of the top professionals. He was born in Riverside, CA and moved to Jersey before his first birthday. His papa introduced him to one cent-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From that point on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup anything he possibly could about poker. Phil would tell his grandparents that he was going to be a professional poker player. He did not permit the negative comments from others kill his goal of being one of the best poker competitors on the planet.
He began competing seriously after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He honed his game at the poker rooms of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a teaching opportunity and winning was not a normal outcome at the time. He made his mark at the 2000 WSOP where he achieved two final tables and came away with his first WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the closing table he destroyed many of the better known professionals including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He decided to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to hard work and a continuing passion for the game of poker. He states that he is learning every day and is very humble about his success. Phil knows he makes blunders in each game of poker and always strives to get better.
Even though Ivey has come first in some big-time tournaments, he likes winning money games on a regular basis.
