Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 where he enjoyed taking part in various card games at a young age. He discovered himself becoming really competitive in these card games while competing against his dad. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s initial 2 years were tough as he played countless hours and lose a majority of the time. He earned some additional money by becoming an runner for the poker enthusiasts. He theorized he could better his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He made an attempt to get more rest and focus attention more on poker.

The real improvement in his abilities began when he started gambling at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the best players would regularly challenge each other. Howard had access into a few of the greatest players in chess. With their assistance, Howard would sharpen his logical thinking abilities. He used these strategy ideas in the game of NL holdem.

Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a great student of poker as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the best female players the poker arena today. Howard Lederer headed to Vegas in 1993 and played cash games for the following decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
