Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has expanded in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many players can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same approach in just about every poker game.

The lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to get the base subtleties of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming range of betting options and because you have several players battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
