Gus Hansen experienced an amazing year on the World Poker Tour where he was the only participant to make it to the last game in 3 of the competitions. Gus Hansen has appeared on High Stakes Poker on GSN where he paid $400, 000 to play. You may remember one of the largest pots in big stakes poker recorded history competing against Daniel Negreanu. Hansen secured a large pot with quads against Daniel’s full house. Hansen has made many tv poker appearances and is considered to be one of the strongest players in the world. While wagering on web poker, a different side of Hansen has appeared. Gus frequently participates in the 200/400 NL max buy in of Forty Thousand dollars. Gus usually buys-in for the min of $16, 000 and plays very poorly. He sits there waiting for a decent hand and then goes all-in. I believe Hansen is an outstanding poker player but not even close to the familiar players at 200/400no limit. Unless he is broke, he has absolutely no reason to play at the game with the minimum buy in.
Playing for the min takes almost all of the skill out of deep stack poker. Gus is assumed to be 1 of the best players in the world but he cannot buy in for the total dollar value. I believe tv can skew our perception of the real world every now and then. The best players anywhere in the world may be players you have won’t have heard about. Gus can be seen gambling on internet poker on Full Tilt. He normally competes in high stakes omaha hi-low and texas hold’em. Gus Hansen has proven himself as a competition player. Can he back up his skills in money rounds?
