Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A round of betting ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. One more sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an exciting array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to compete in Omaha hi-low.
