Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha hi low starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants can get baffled. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems complicated at first, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha hi lo provides an overwhelming collection of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s worth your time to play Omaha Hi-Lo.
