Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of betting follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are handed out, this is known as the flop. Another round of betting happens. After all the players have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have several players battling for the high hand, as well as several shooting for the low. If you prefer a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha 8 or better.
