Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost every poker game.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the high hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi/low provides an exciting array of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many players trying for the high, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
