Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further round of betting happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in just about every poker game.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the start, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting range of wagering possibilities and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, and many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha/8.
